Survivor

On the 6 month Anniversary of my Stroke
Six months ago.

It lasted all of about five seconds,
But, how it changed my life.

One moment happy as a lark,
Singing in the shower
And glad no music critics were in attendance,
And the next
Confused.
Bewildered
Disoriented.
Parts of me not working.
Other parts of me
Not really aware
That parts of me
Were not working.

But that was six months ago.

Six months ago today, in fact.

The physical therapy,
The frustration of learning how to walk again,
And how to type again,
And work again,
And how to play the piano and guitar again.
And did I mention
Learning how to walk again?

Not to mention getting my blood pressure under control
And keeping it there.

And now,
Six months later,
My hand is working again,
And my leg is mostly working again,
And my blood pressure IS under control,
And perhaps most importantly,
And I think in great part due
To the prayers and support of friends
And family,
And the grace of God,
I am here to tell the story.

I am a stroke survivor,
And every day is a gift.
