Skate By David Roth © 5th December, 2004
Spinning, turning, slip and slide On a sheet of ice we glide On a wintry day we ride Skating in the countryside.
Windmills line the river’s edge Cattails form a crispy hedge Children in a roving wedge Sail on and on, this is our pledge.
Adrift atop a rail of steel Brisk wind in my face I feel, A child’s wonder can’t conceal, The freedom of the ice’s appeal!
To race along a sheet of ice, To twist and turn and spin and slice, The child within me to entice, To jump, to glide, to try it twice!
Between the banks of glistening snow We ride a crystal smooth plateau; And sing and laugh as on we go Our faces flushed and all aglow.
For here on winter’s frozen slate, We glide through our euphoric state, Attempting every figure eight, And grasp the wind as on we skate! |
