I Saw Love Today By David Roth (c) 5 August, 2001
The sun rose brightly through my open window today But the radiant beams of energy Which had breached the span of time and space to welcome my day Gave off no heat Shed no light.
The morning doves, awash in the new day's light Took their usual place by my open window, their gentle cooing Signaling wafting musical good mornings Yet sounded no sound Sang no song.
I looked around my empty, darkened universe Mindful of the loss that had overtaken me. My love, my life, my essence, my being Were there no longer.
Only the bleak darkness of a barren soul looked back at me.
The day, so like the many others before it since she left Brought me no joy. Brought me neither love nor reason to love. Like so many other mornings before it I saw no love.
But then, perchance I happened upon a man of age. Holding gently the arms of his ancient love Whispering tenderly into ears no longer able to understand Speaking tender drops of kindness And I saw love in his ancient eyes.
I saw the tears of a father Holding new life in his hands Reaching out for words he couldn?t express Smiling tenderly at the mother of his new creation And I saw love in his hopeful eyes.
I heard the music of the children at play Singing the song of life that only children know Holding onto life as only a child can And I saw love in their innocent eyes.
I watched the newness of life beginning In the tender embrace of; newlyweds Oblivious to the world around them Seeing each other as if for the first time Knowing it would last an eternity And I saw love in their longing eyes.
And so I returned to my room Where the fresh light of the new day was beginning to fade into darkness And suddenly there was light, and warmth, and hope, and joy.
In the tender words of an ancient love In the gentle touch of a new father In the playful music of a child's laughter In the warm embrace of new love
And I realized, that I too, had been loved
For I saw love today. |
