The First Tiny Flake

The first tiny flake drifted down in the night
The first one of many, to nature’s delight
The stars giving way to dark cotton clouds
A full moon now hidden in heaven’s dark shroud

The broad, barren meadow would slowly transform
From gray, daunting shadows to marshmallow warm
Each silver-white crystal alone and unique
Would add to the vista, no longer so bleak

It’s Christmas tomorrow, and as the snow falls
The lights of the Christmas tree dance on the walls
A crackling, warm fireplace, burning and bright
Adds to the magic this pre- Christmas night

The children are finally tucked in for the night
And dreaming, no doubt, of the coming delight
With visions of sugarplums, candy and toys
Wrapped in bright paper for good girls and boys

We worked side by side in the crisp firelight
The presents were wrapped, lasting long in the night
We hung all the stockings; we stuffed them with glee
We stood and held hands by the light of the tree

The fire slowly died to a gentle, soft glow
As we dozed on the couch having finished our show
The tree glittered on while the snow outside fell
A carpet of diamonds continued to swell

In just a few hours the children will wake
Rubbing sleep from their eyes as the journey they make
Coming down to the room with the bright lights and joy
To peppermint candycanes, cookies and toys

And outside the snowflakes continue to fly
A Christmas-white blanket drifts down from the sky
But Winter’s cold gale, try though it may
Cannot dampen the joy of this Christmas Day
