a memorial tribute to Syl and Ben Frier.
Syl ‘boldly went’ Sunday 30th April, 2006
It’s almost impossible
to see either one of them
as individuals,
so perfect a matched set were they.
I met them almost ten years ago,
on the internet, in a chat room thingy
dedicated to a passion we all shared,
and the dream to ‘boldly go’.
Even meeting them the first time,
it was as the pair, not the ones.
“Greetings, we are Ben and Syl”
was how they met everyone.
And they loved each other
in the way many want,
few experience,
but writers always talk about.
Completely, and without reservation,
openly, and without hesitation,
selflessly, and without stipulation,
such was their once in a lifetime love.
She the boisterous one, quick to jibe and joke,
and he the quiet one, soft spoken and deep,
each the piece that exactly fit
the missing piece in the other.
They were my friends,
and they defined friendship,
much as they defined love,
and I weep for their loss
for in this world of haste and waste,
where no one has time or care
for anyone other than themselves,
their departure from this plane
leaves behind a stark emptiness,
and I find that I miss them,
yet not without knowing
I am richer for having known them.
